What is a foster carer?

A foster carer provides a safe and stable family environment for vulnerable children and youth.

You may have heard people use the term ‘foster parent’. We prefer to use the term ‘foster carer’ because children in care already have parents and, while they may not currently be living with them, they still hold the role of parent in that child’s life. As a foster carer you will need to help any child in your care maintain a connection with their family.

The term foster carer can avoid any confusion for the child and any intrusion on the role of their birth family.
