Establishing a partnership with Payukotayno

Key Assets Fostering has embarked upon a new partnership with Payukotayno, James and Hudson Bay Family Services, a Children’s Aid Society based in Northern Ontario.

The alliance will form a foundation for improved foster care throughout James and Hudson Bay, an area which is 85% First Nation (Cree).

Helping to improve foster care in Northern Ontario

By utilizing the organization’s experience and knowledge of the Cree community, Key Assets Fostering hopes to use its own established background within Children’s Services to provide a strong network of support throughout the area.

The dedicated professionals based at Key Assets Fostering are being led by Pauline Murphy, Program Director for the upcoming foster parent recruitment campaign and an Aboriginal individual who was raised in the local area. She will be supported by Kathryn Rock, Provincial Director for Ontario, and together they will be working in partnership with Payukotayno led by Executive Director, Ernest Beck.

Together, Key Assets Fostering and Payukotayno hope to make a real impact by providing foster care in Northern Ontario for the rising numbers of out of home children and youth who can’t be fostered locally.

Addressing the shortage of foster parents

There is a severe shortage of foster parents available in the remote James and Hudson Bay area and throughout Northern Ontario. Key Assets Fostering hopes to address this shortage by helping to recruit and support foster parents locally, with a specific goal to support Payukotayno with their own mission to keep children within their home communities.

Currently, 50% of the children and young people having been placed in care in the local area have had to be flown out to other locations. This can seriously disrupt a child’s community and cultural identity, losing contact with their families as well as their homes. By encouraging more local people to come forward and become foster parents, Key Assets Fostering hopes to help prevent this interruption in children’s development and improve their outcomes for the future.
