Children and youth need foster care for a variety of reasons. Some may have experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse, some may have experienced neglect or other forms of trauma.
Regardless of the reason why children need foster care, they will undoubtedly feel the separation from their birth family in some way.
Even if children and youth in foster care with Key Assets Fostering present as happy and smiling, their past experiences will have an impact on their behaviour and development.
Some children express these experiences through tantrums, withdrawal, aggression, clinginess, rejection or over-compliance. Other children may act older or younger than their years or, as a result of being placed with a number of different foster parents, may not know who to trust or what is expected of them.
Due to the impact of these experiences, and because of the complex psychological, emotional, and/or developmental needs of some of the children and youth in foster care, Key Assets Fostering offers a high level of foster care training and support to all our foster parents.
Across Canada, Aboriginal children are significantly overrepresented in the child welfare system.
Key Assets Fostering is currently seeking foster parents for Aboriginal children and youth in the areas of Moosonee and Moose Factory in James and Hudson Bay. Due to a shortage of local foster parents, many of these children are unfortunately being moved to live in Southern Ontario, losing their connection to their family, their friends and their culture.
To promote and preserve their cultural and social identity, Key Assets Fostering is seeking foster parents who live locally and come from all different backgrounds who can respect Aboriginal culture and encourage a sense of belonging in a child or youth in foster care.
Key Assets Fostering provides services for children and youth, many of whom have complex physical, emotional or cultural needs. Across Ontario we require foster parents who are capable of looking after these children and youth with difficult behaviours.
If you’re thinking of becoming a foster parent with Key Assets Fostering, please contact Key Assets Fostering today.
