Key Assets Fostering - Fostering information

The role of an Independent Fostering Agency

As an Independent Fostering Agency, Key Assets Fostering works in partnership with local child and family service providers to offer high quality foster care placements for children and youth across the provinces of Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our role in Northern and Southern Ontario

In Ontario, Key Assets Fostering works to place children independently through our partnership with local Children’s Aid Societies.

Children’s Aid Societies in Ontario are required by law to explore family arrangements or Kin arrangements before placing a child in the care of the fostering system. A Children’s Aid Society can place a child or youth in foster care in their own foster care system or through an Independent Fostering Agency.

Often the placements that are referred to Key Assets Fostering are for children and youth with difficult behaviours or complex physical or emotional needs.

Our role in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Department of Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) in Newfoundland and Labrador is the government department that monitors the welfare of children and young people across the province. As an Independent Fostering Agency, Key Assets Fostering works in partnership with CYFS to take fostering placements.

The role of Key Assets Fostering as an Independent Fostering Agency in Newfoundland and Labrador is similar to our role in Ontario. The CYFS has the authority to place children with their own foster parents or to seek alternative arrangements for a child or youth who cannot live with their birth family.

In the event that a child or young person has complex needs or exhibits difficult behaviours, the CYFS has the option to refer them to Key Assets Fostering for specialized foster care.

Supporting and training foster parents

As an Independent Fostering Agency, Key Assets Fostering is able to offer a unique approach to foster care and a specialized level of support and training to our foster parents. Due to the complex and demanding level of care required by the nature of our placements, Key Assets Fostering offers 24-hour foster parent support and a wide range of foster parent training courses.
