The different terms for ‘foster parent’
Across the globe, there are many variations of how the term ‘foster parent’ is referenced. Some countries, including the UK, prefer to use the term ‘foster carer’ as it better represents the fact that almost all children in care have birth parents and, although they may not currently be in a position to parent, they still hold the official title of ‘parent’ in that child’s life. In that sense, the term ‘foster parent’ can be seen to intrude on the role of the child’s birth family. The term ‘foster carer’ is also more commonly used in parts of Canada.
